Brooklyn duo Beacon recently released their second EP, For Now. It’s a gentle and frail affair consisting of subtle and bass heavy R&B beats complemented by a distinctive and tender vocal.
It’s haunting and hypnotising conjuring a smooth and relaxing sound. While the vocals sound tender on the outside the lyrics are dark and uncompromising, as third track ‘Pulse’ sees them contemplating the difference between love and lust in "It's a long walk from lust to love… And if I get caught, it's not my fault."
Out of the five tracks on For Now all but one take a downbeat outlook with fourth track ‘Feeling’s Gone’ having the basis of a rave synth turning up the notch and dance-ability. The chilled out tracks tend to work better for the band, with ‘Feeling’s Gone’ sounding a tad disjointed from the rest of the EP. Appart from this, the EP flows wondefully and is a beautiful release that I’m sure will capture the attention of many who are into the American sounding electronic music.
Unfortunately it seemed to pass me by somewhat. Yes it is undoubtedly technically proficient and has all the basis for a great release, but it just didn’t capture my imagination or attention. An enjoyable listen and decent record which is quickly forgotten.
